Why electricity prices vary by state

Fuel and generation costs are only part of a retail bill. Transmission, distribution, maintenance, demand patterns, regulations, and rate design also matter. Island systems and large connected mainland networks face different constraints. A statewide average cannot isolate the contribution of each cause or tell you which plan is cheapest.

EIA explains these price drivers. Retail choice also depends on the utility service area and customer class, not simply a label applied to a whole state. EIA's supplier-choice guidance explains the distinction.

What state rates mean for garage heating

A 4,000 W resistance heater running four actual hours a day for 30 days uses 480 kWh. At the rates above, five such months cost $1,152 in Hawaii versus $305 in Louisiana. This holds runtime constant; it does not predict either state's climate or heating season.

Work out the cost to run a garage heater with your bill rate, size, and duty cycle. Find the size first with the garage heater calculator. Read the Texas electricity guide for a full monthly history, market context, and heating example.
